Abstract
The Touro Club was established in 1901 by members of the German Jewish population in Hartford. Unlike other fraternal organizations which usually had sick benefit provisions, the Touro Club was formed exclusively for social purposes. The organization rented a clubhouse first at 47 Prospect Street, later at 1003 Main Street. Typical activities included dinners, dances, poker games, and billiards. In 1922, the Touro Club became the Tumble Brook Country Club, with a clubhouse and 9-hole golf course in Bloomfield.
