Abstract

The Jewish Children’s Service Organization provides scholarships, camperships and other financial assistance to Jewish children and colleges students in the Hartford area. The JSCO also provides grants and allocations to agencies serving the needs of children. The JSCO is the successor to the Hebrew Ladies Orphan Asylum, established in 1907 by a group of Jewish women to provide residential care for orphaned Jewish children. The Home was housed in a series of buildings and known by various names until the late 1940s. When traditional orphanages were replaced by the foster care system, the Home changed its name and adapted to changing needs. While the JCSO still provides assistance to children who cannot be cared for by their parents, the organization’s mission has expanded to include children from intact low-income families. This collection contains applications, minutes, financial and miscellaneous material from the late 1950s to the 1990s as well as secondary material documenting the early history of the children’s home.

Redacted Information - June 13, 2017

June 13, 2017:

Earlier this year, members of the JCSO looked in our files on their organization in order to put together something for an anniversary program and discovered confidential information which they wanted to destroy. Over the course of several meetings and conversations, it was decided that JCSO members would go through the files and redact sensitive information. Much of the material consisted on applications for scholarship requests (including for minors) and income tax files.

Today, several JSCO members, along with Jeanne Lowrey and Ann Brandwein began to go through the files. JSCO members identified material which needed to be redacted while Jeanne and Ann redacted and copied. Original copies of affected materials were redacted where necessary and copies were made. The originals with sensitive information were returned to the representatives of the organization for destruction and the copies were replaced in the files. Tax returns were removed with a note.

In spite of efforts to impart the importance of not getting files mixed up to the JCSO members, several small folders had materials removed and put in other folders. While the volunteer put the items back after I discovered the error, I cannot say 100% if they were returned to the correct folder or if some of that may have gotten put in another folder. If this is discovered to be the case in the future, please correct it.

As of today, we still have parts of boxes 1&2 to redact and make copies of. The JCSO people will have to come in again to go through the remaining two boxes.
