Abstract
John J. Rome is best known for his association with the Honiss Oyster House, located for more than 130 years across from the Old State House in Hartford. Rome, like his partners, started out with the Honiss around 1927. In 1949 he became its president. In 1974, Rome sold most of his interest and retired. This collection consists of memorabilia kept by Rome that document his career as a restaurateur.
During its heyday, Honiss Oyster House was known for the extensive collection of photographs that hung on all the walls of the restaurant. The photograph collection was donated to the Connecticut Historical Society when the original restaurant location closed. The new owner did business in a new location on Asylum Street for a few years before the business finally closed altogether.
