General Note

Oral history outlines Roslyn Katz's life as told by her sister Gertrude after Roslyn's passing. Covers childhood as well as service in Calcutta, India, as well as her life after the service. Katz earned her degree at UCONN in Home Economics, became a teacher for a short time at the John Fitch High School in Windsor, which she disliked. She then worked in several New York Hospitals and learned to be a dietician. When World War II was gearing up, she signed up to join the WACS, serving as a mess officer first in the states, then asking to be sent abroad. She and her family didn’t know where she was being deployed (she was issued heavy winter clothes as a decoy) however she ended up in India, where she was an officer. She had a great deal of responsibility in the operation of the mess hall. After the war, she worked for many years at G. Fox before leaving to open the store Modern Woman with Marjorie Doyg. The business was continued after their deaths by Roslyn’s sister Gertrude and niece Nan Schwartz until it closed in 1984.

Roslyn Katz died in 1975 after several massive strokes.
