Biographical / Historical
In 1981 Hebrew College created an Extension in the Hartford area to offer non-credit classes. This initiative was actualized by the joint efforts of the Greater Hartford Jewish Federation-Committee on Suburban Jewish Education, Congregation B'nai Israel, Congregation Knesset Israel, Temple Beth Tefilah, Temple Beth Shalom, and the Glastonbury Jewish Community Association.
The program was known as "Hebrew College - Hartford Branch". Dr. Alfred Weisel was the Administrator, Dr. Arnold Dashefsky held the title of Suburban Consultant, and Mrs. Fritzie Spaien was the Registrar. Although college credit was not available, students could earn certificates of acheivement.
The first classes offered were in 1982: a Hebrew Ulpan - "Beginning Hebrew Conversation", "The Jewish Life Cycle", "The Book Of Job: Responses To Tragedy", and "The Relevance Of The Torah, Prophets And Talmud In Our Day".
